On March 29, 2006, Cox was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for bank robbery. Cox was convicted of bank robbery on May 18, 2006 and sentenced to 9 years in federal prison. On May 20, 2006, the United States Marshals Service delivered Cox to the Federal Correctional Institute in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania where he began serving his sentence.

On September 06, 2006, Cox escaped from the Federal Correctional Institute in Lewisburg. An arrest warrant for the charge of escape was then issued for him. Cox's whereabouts are unknown.

U.S. Marshals searched Cox's cell but found no names, addresses or telephone numbers. All of the inmates living around Cox's cell were interviewed but they provided no helpful information. It is unknown if Cox had help from the inside or outside in escaping.
